MV X-Press Pearl fire and sinking off Sri Lanka
The container ship MV X-Press Pearl, carrying nitric acid and other chemicals, caught fire off Colombo, Sri Lanka in late May 2021, with two crew members injured in an explosion. The vessel burned for around two weeks and sank in early June 2021, covering nearby beaches in charred plastic pellets. Sri Lankan authorities prepared for a possible oil spill and sought compensation from the ship's operator, keeping attention on the wreck through mid-June 2021.
